Dear James
How was your summer? I hope you could finish reading the book that we talked about, last summer. I hope you completed watching the movies that we decided to watch. When. We. Were. Together. Or maybe we never were. I mean, you called me your "summer thing", didn't you?
Loving you felt like salt air, it was completely unmatchable. Even though I knew that your heart belonged to Betty, I couldn't help drowing in your quicksand. From spending sleep less nights hoping you'd text, to waiting for you behind the mall, I really lived for the hope of it all. But like they say, "chase two girls, lose THE ONE". With hindsight, i realised that we were sparkles in the coastal sun, like broken glass. I became a faceless and a nameless woman overnight, when you went back to Betty after all the promises you made. Or maybe you never meant them because afterall, you weren't mine to lose. Stripped of my identity, I stood still like a silhouette behind the two of you and who is to blame? Not you, it's me. I fell for you, knowing that this relationship was destined to die. I see her, wearing the jewels you gave her. She looks like Aphrodite in them, so beautiful. It kills me because I run out of the things I could say when I see you both together. How Betty's face lights up when she says your name. Her face contorts into endless laughter and glimmer. I think of all the times when you said I mattered to you because at the end of the day, we're only 16 and we don't know anything. Your "summer thing" still loves you but chooses to let you go because if you really liked me, then there wouldn't have been a choice. Maybe, I'll find love and solace in someone, someday. Maybe, I'll not just be their summer thing. Maybe, I'll not be the faceless woman whose love was discarded. Maybe, they'll not just love me in August but for their entire lifetime.
Loving you was young and beautiful. It was sunshine after incessant rain. It was rain after ceaseless sunshine. But letting you go will never be easy.
Yours Augustine
